the ask
The BADC, one of the oldest bar associations in the country, needed to modernize its operations, improve membership engagement, and increase revenue. Established in 1871, the organization was struggling with its business model, a shrinking membership, and inefficiencies in event and operational management. Mark Bohay Consulting (MB) was engaged to grow membership, manage events, and improve day-to-day operations, all while maintaining the organization’s historic legacy.
Solution
MB worked closely with the BADC leadership to develop and implement comprehensive solutions across management, operations, and events. Key improvements included:
- Transitioning operations online, such as moving nominations, elections, and awards processes to digital formats, and migrating email to Google Apps to cut costs by $7,000–$10,000 annually.
- Modernizing the membership experience through website updates, introducing auto-renewals, and targeted member engagement campaigns.
- Streamlining event management by shifting to Eventbrite, allowing for easier registration, sponsorship purchases, and event reminders.
Result
MB’s efforts led to remarkable growth for the BADC:
- Revenue increased to $323,000, with $209,000 generated from sponsorships.
- 39 events were successfully managed, attracting 2,631 attendees and improving the overall event experience.
- Membership grew by 37% in just 18 months, thanks to effective outreach and improved digital engagement tools.
MB’s work not only brought the BADC into the modern era but also revitalized its position as a key player in Washington, D.C.’s legal landscape, ensuring a sustainable future for the organization.
